Damian Williams, the former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, is a partner in the Litigation Department. Damian draws on his many years of experience as a senior leader, litigator and strategist to advise clients in high-stakes federal and state government investigations, white collar matters and sensitive internal investigations, and crisis management.

EXPERIENCE

Between 2021-2024, Damian served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), where he oversaw all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States. Damian led a staff of more than 450 and supervised significant matters involving securities and commodities fraud, public corruption, national security threats, Bank Secrecy Act and sanctions violations, cybercrime, money laundering, sex trafficking, healthcare fraud, violent crime, civil rights violations, as well as False Claims Act and environmental matters. Damian is the first Black person to serve as United States Attorney in SDNY. His tenure is widely recognized as one of the most productive in the district's history.

While serving as United States Attorney, Damian also served as the Chairman of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, a body of approximately 15 U.S. Attorneys that advises the Attorney General on matters of policy, procedure, and management. As Chairman, Damian regularly interfaced with senior officials across the Justice Department and was well-known as a national leader in the Department. Damian co-led the development of the Voluntary Self-Disclosure Policy for U.S. Attorney’s Offices and created SDNY’s Whistleblower Program to encourage early and voluntary self-disclosure of criminal conduct by individuals.

Prior to his appointment as United States Attorney, Damian served as the Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force at SDNY. In that role, Damian supervised some of the nation’s most complex investigations and prosecutions involving accounting and valuation fraud, market manipulation, insider trading and investor fraud. Prior to his service as Chief, Damian was a decorated Assistant U.S. Attorney and tried thirteen cases to verdict.

Earlier in his career, Damian clerked for Justice John Paul Stevens of the U.S. Supreme Court and then-Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He went on to join Paul, Weiss as a litigation associate from 2009-2012.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Damian has received numerous accolades for his achievements. In 2024, TIME Magazine named Damian as one of the world’s most influential rising leaders. Damian is also the recipient of the Cressey Award, presented by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, recognizing lifetime achievement in the detection and deterrence of fraud. He is an active speaker on fraud, financial crime, investigations and other white collar crime topics.
